How does laser tattoo removal work?

High intensity energy breaks apart the ink into smaller particles. The smallest particles are then able to be removed by your immune system. While most machines use nanosecond duration pulses, Enlighten can also deliver picosecond pulses, proven to be more effective at removing ink.

Does it hurt?

There is no such thing as painless tattoo removal, but most people tolerate laser tattoo removal well. It is much less painful than getting the tattoo.

How long does it take?

The amount of time it will take to completely remove your tattoo will depend on a lot of factors, including the size, depth, and colors used, the location, and the tattoo’s age. Most tattoos will require between 3-6 sessions to completely remove. A more specific timeline will be given at your consultation. A single session will usually take between 10-30 minutes.

Will I have scars?

The laser technology targets the pigments in the ink without damaging the surrounding tissue. With proper aftercare, there is very little risk of scarring.

Will it work on my skin color?

The Enlighten laser system has a high margin of safety for all skin types.

Will my tattoo be fully gone?

In most cases, our patients see their tattoos completely disappear. Dual frequencies and dual pulse lengths allow us to eliminate most tattoo ink colors. Where most lasers can treat black and dark blue, Enlighten is effective on most other colors, including red, yellow, orange, and brown. Certain colors are more difficult to remove than others, and you will be given a better idea of what to expect during your consultation.

Why remove when I can get a cover up?

Cover-up tattoos are limited, both by the original tattoo and the skill of the artist doing the work. There is a risk that the result will also be unsatisfactory, or that the new ink will fade to reveal the old design. It can be harder to remove these cover-ups than the original tattoo. However, it is possible to lighten a tattoo significantly with laser treatment and then get a cover up tattoo to increase the chances of good results.
